Metakilili
The Africa Center for Health Systems & Gender Justice (ACHGJ) is a Pan-African social impact organisation working to transform health systems through gender justice.
It doesn’t have to be this way. These inequities are not accidental they are the result of colonial legacies, chronically underfunded systems, donor-driven agendas, and male-dominated leadership, reinforced by restrictive cultural and religious norms and anti-rights movements. We believe Mekatilili, and millions like her, deserve more than survival — they deserve the power to shape their own futures.
We exist because Africa’s health systems were not designed with women and girls at the centre — and too often, they still aren’t. ACHGJ works to correct this imbalance by shifting power, resources, and decision-making authority to the women and communities most affected by health inequities.
Rooted in lived experience and feminist values, we fund and support community-led, intersectional approaches to health systems change. Our work goes beyond service delivery to address how health systems are financed, governed, and held accountable — ensuring they listen, respond, and deliver with dignity.
ACHGJ’s work spans inclusive health financing, feminist leadership, community-driven care models, research, and policy advocacy, with a strong focus on East Africa and a growing continental footprint. We work alongside feminist grantee partners, movements, and governments to redesign systems that advance both health equity and economic justice.
We are grounded in community, strategic in action, and unapologetic about the change required. This is not charity. It is systemic correction. Rooted in justice. Powered by women.
We believe women like Mekatilili deserve more than survival. Yet millions like her face systems that force impossible choices between health, dignity, and opportunity.
We exist to change that.
