TRANSFORMING HEALTH SYSTEMS THROUGH GENDER JUSTICE

The Africa Centre for Health Systems & Gender Justice (ACHGJ) is a Pan-African social impact organisation working to transform health systems through gender justice. We shift power, resources and decision-making authority towards women and communities most affected by health inequities.

Our work is organised across four interconnected areas that address the systems, power structures and emerging forces shaping health and gender justice across Africa.

Advancing health systems that respond to women’s needs, rights and lived realities across the life course, from maternal and reproductive health to gender-based violence and women’s broader health needs.

Strengthening equitable, accountable and community-responsive health systems through health financing, primary healthcare, community health systems and recognition of the care economy.

Expanding women’s economic power, leadership and voice so they can influence the institutions, policies and decisions shaping their health, livelihoods and communities.

Advancing women’s participation and leadership in health research, science and innovation while promoting responsible, inclusive and accountable approaches to technology, AI and data.

ACHGJ creates change through three interconnected pathways — Catalyse, Equip and Amplify — designed to shift power, strengthen leadership and capacity, and elevate African-led knowledge, innovation and lived experience.

We catalyse gender-just economic power by investing in community-led financing solutions that redistribute power, expand access to resources, and strengthen the economic influence of grassroots women and structurally marginalised communities for healthcare equity.

We equip women, communities, and health and economic system actors with the knowledge, skills and leadership authority needed to drive gender-transformative change and strengthen inclusive, accountable institutions.

We amplify the innovations and lived experiences of women and structurally marginalised communities to disrupt dominant narratives and transform harmful gender norms, laws and practices within health and economic systems.

Our initiatives turn ACHGJ’s systems-change approach into focused action, bringing together communities, practitioners, leaders and partners to address specific challenges across health, gender and economic justice.

We generate and bring together research, policy analysis, data, tools and African-led perspectives that deepen understanding of health systems and gender justice and help turn evidence into policy, practice, investment and action.
